Every day seems to bring something unpredictable with J.D. Vance, but his recent appearance at a Georgia donut shop had people buzzing for a very unexpected reason: his hair. Social media was quick to point out that the Vice Presidential hopeful’s hairstyle looked more than a little off, with user Rob DenBleyker highlighting the unusual look on X. The uneven shelf of hair sitting atop Vance’s head with no blending or gradation became the real story of the day.
While it’s highly unlikely that this was a deliberate style choice, the end result drew plenty of comparisons to a hastily placed toupee. “It looks like someone just plopped a toupee on top of his head,” said Kevin Baker, a stylist at Material Salon in Tampa, FL. Baker, along with another barber who preferred to remain anonymous, speculated that the cut was either a DIY effort or a last-minute job with little attention to detail. “That’s someone who thought ‘something is better than nothing,’ which is obviously incorrect,” said the anonymous source.

Vance, who is often cast as a “man of the people,” might shy away from expensive salons, but as the stylists pointed out, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a good haircut just a skilled barber. The speculation is that Vance either attempted to trim his own hair (or perhaps enlisted an aide to help, possibly on a campaign bus in motion) or simply picked a barber without checking their previous work. As one rule of thumb, the experts recommend looking at a barber’s portfolio, whether online or through word of mouth, before sitting in the chair. And for anyone going the DIY route, it’s important to actually know what you’re doing before picking up the clippers.
But the trouble didn’t stop with the cut itself. According to the anonymous barber, Vance’s lack of hair product made things even worse. “I don’t see signs of product at all. If the whole thing was pushed inward and held there with product, he could probably fake that it was a wearable haircut.” Stylists say this is a perfect reminder that the right product can make all the difference styling is essential to make a haircut look its best. They also advise starting product application at the back of the head and working forward, ensuring even coverage and avoiding too much buildup in the front. Just because you can’t see the back doesn’t mean others won’t notice it.
Baker also shared a crucial tip: “Always ask to see the back.” While Vance’s policies may be backward-looking, he seems to have literally forgotten about the back of his own head. For anyone in the public eye or just aiming for a sharp look a little extra care with your haircut and styling goes a long way.
